What do people say when you tell them you work in construction?
When I say I work in construction, people are often surprised and ask, “Oh really? What do you do?” When I explain that I’m in virtual design and construction, they usually look a bit puzzled—likely because they have no idea what virtual construction entails or that it’s a role within the construction industry.
What do you like best about being in the construction industry?
What I like best about being in the construction industry is seeing the hard work my team and I put in come to life. Most of our efforts take place before construction even begins—we create digital twins and resolve conflicts before breaking ground. This process enables the trades to prefabricate and allows all trades to install with greater accuracy, quality, and efficiency. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch a project come together exactly as we coordinated it.
How does more diversity on a construction jobsite help teams solve problems better?
I feel diversity adds perspective, seeing things through different but complementary lenses. Everyone, doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, brings a unique perspective shaped by their experiences. Since women and men often have different life experiences, combining these perspectives creates a more well-rounded and beneficial approach to solving problems and developing plans.
Why did you choose Swinerton?
When I came in for my interview, I was introduced to many people in the office, and everyone was incredibly welcoming. I immediately noticed the friendly, family-like dynamic they had with my soon-to-be boss. Initially, I worried that joining such a large company would make me feel like just a number, but I quickly realized that wasn’t the case. I also loved the idea of working for an employee-owned company—where you truly have a voice and a stake in the success of the business.
What do you enjoy about your job?
My favorite part of my job is my team. I’ve built up a team from 2 to 19 while also regionalizing with NorCal & Hawaii totaling 32. We’ve created a strong culture within our team that makes it fun to work together, to help each other, to grind out the hard work together. Every one of them are like family to me. We truly enjoy working together and have fun with it. I also appreciate that Swinerton continues to provide me with opportunities to grow this team and that our leadership recognizes the value of the work we deliver.
What is your advice to women looking start a career in construction?
For women or anyone looking to start a career in construction, remember that with everyone you interact with, you’re building a relationship. It could be a 5 minute conversation or years of working together. Build relationships everywhere you go with everyone. This will ultimately build trust, and before you know it, you’ll have an army of supporters that speak highly of you even when you’re not in the room.
