Kathryn Piraino, Assistant Project Manager

I’m Kathryn Piraino, and it’s been with Swinerton for almost four years.

Professional Journey:

I embarked on my Swinerton voyage at the onset of the pandemic, diving headfirst into my first project at Spokane Community College Campus. This initial endeavor, amidst uncertain times, ignited a passion for healthcare construction within me. The opportunity to create spaces that promote patient well-being and enable effective care delivery resonated deeply. Additionally, leading the Facility Solutions Department alongside Rob Koch has been thrilling, laying the groundwork for a new chapter in our business journey.

My journey in construction was inspired by my entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to witness entire buildings come to life. From my ex-husband’s roofing business to office administration and service calls, I found my calling in the dynamic, fast-paced construction world. I thrive on the unpredictability and the constant learning curve that construction offers, embracing each day with joy and resilience.

Role and Responsibilities:

As an Assistant Project Manager in Special Projects & Facility Solutions, I wear many hats – from preconstruction and estimating to project closeout. However, my favorite part of the job lies in fostering stakeholder communication and collaboration. Navigating the intricacies of owner-architect-contractor relationships fuels my passion, and working with exceptional project teams adds joy to every endeavor.

Challenges and Triumphs:

Every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities. While I may lack the technical background of a construction management degree, I embrace it as a chance to engage with my project teams and learn from the best in the business. Asking questions and seeking knowledge are invaluable tools on this journey.

One of my proudest achievements has been Swinerton INW’s inaugural major Special Projects TI at Spokane’s largest children’s hospital. Integrating self-perform specialties and streamlined communication has set this project up for success. Additionally, serving on the children’s hospital council has been a privilege, allowing me to give back to the medical community while forging valuable connections for future endeavors.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals:

To all the women considering a career in construction, I say this: the sky’s the limit. Construction offers diverse roles suited to every personality and skill set. Embrace the journey, learn from the best, and believe in your ability to overcome any challenge. Swinerton has been a pillar of support in my professional growth, encouraging continued education and networking opportunities through associations like NAWIC.

Personal Touch:

What I cherish most about working at Swinerton is the sense of family and inclusivity. The company’s commitment to being family-friendly resonates deeply with me as I balance my role with motherhood. Outside of work, you’ll often find me on the slopes in the winter or skiing on Coeur d’Alene Lake during the summer – skiing is my ultimate passion, escape, and joy.
