Layla Dib, Project Engineer

I’m Layla Dib, and I’ve been part of the Swinerton family for eight months. My introduction to Swinerton came through one of my college professors who had previously worked with the company. Intrigued by the hands-on opportunities Swinerton offered, I joined the Charlotte Division. It was the perfect platform for diving into various projects and gaining invaluable experience.

Inspiration in Construction:

Although construction wasn’t initially on my career radar, a senior design class opened my eyes to its allure. The industry’s uniqueness lies in its diversity – meeting people from varied backgrounds, each contributing their expertise to a common goal. At the heart of it all is teamwork, a constant thread weaving through every project.

Role and Responsibilities:

As a Project Engineer, my days are dynamic and filled with diverse tasks. Every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities, from liaising with subcontractors and owners to managing project take-offs and assisting with budgeting and scheduling. Collaborating with the preconstruction team has broadened my horizons, allowing me to glean insights from various projects.

Contributions to Success:

As a newcomer to the industry, I bring a fresh perspective. My willingness to ask questions and challenge existing processes has paved the way for innovation and refinement. Estimating projects has provided me with a platform to pose queries, stimulate discussions, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Challenges and Triumphs:

Navigating the fine line between seeking help and showcasing competence has been a significant challenge. However, by embracing honesty and vulnerability, I’ve overcome this hurdle, realizing that asking questions is not a sign of weakness but a growth path. Winning the Charlotte Fire Department Station #30 project is a testament to teamwork and dedication.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals:

To all the women considering a career in construction, I say this: the industry is far more welcoming and supportive than you might expect. Don’t hesitate to voice your opinions and ideas – your perspective is invaluable. At Swinerton, I’ve found a nurturing environment where my voice is heard and valued.

Bonding with fellow women in construction over workouts has been empowering and enriching.
