Summer Vaimaona, Division Human Resources Manager

My name is Summer Vaimaona. I am the the Division HR Manager for our Hawaii Division. I have been with Swinerton for four years.

Role and Responsibilities

As the Division HR Manager for our Hawaii Division, my day looks very different every day- it’s quite adventurous I must say.  The best part of my role is that it’s people-centric through and through; my day-to-day responsibilities revolve around employee engagement, talent management, and fostering a positive work culture.

Pursuing Career in Construction

Oddly enough, I stumbled upon this industry when I wasn’t even looking. After spending years in Tech, the opportunity to transition into a new field and broaden my skill set was both unexpected and exciting.

Challenges and Triumphs

Construction is undeniably a male-dominated industry, which makes having a voice and offering a different perspective all the more meaningful. Contributing fresh insights and challenging the status quo has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my experience.  This can be intimidating at first, but I have found that if you speak up, share your thoughts, and contribute your ideas with confidence, your insights can bring fresh perspectives, spark meaningful discussions, and even drive positive change. The more you engage, the more you’ll grow, and the more impact you’ll have.

Best Part about Construction

I love knowing that even in a small way, I’m contributing to the communities we’re building for future generations. Having insight into these incredible projects—structures that will one day serve my grandchildren—is both inspiring and deeply fulfilling.  In HR, I love having the opportunity to help shape employees’ career trajectories, helping them develop their skills and grow closer to achieving their professional goals.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Be bold in your goals – there is a place for you here.  The impact and perspective that women contribute to this industry is game changing and valuable no matter which team you support.

Empowering Women in Construction

Honestly, I see WIC Week much like Valentine’s Day—it’s more than just a day or a week; it’s a mindset. While I’m grateful for a dedicated time to spotlight the incredible contributions women bring to this industry, that recognition should be ongoing, and a spotlight that deserves consistent celebration.  On the flip side, I’m especially grateful to Swinerton for placing such a strong emphasis on WIC Week, ensuring that we celebrate, support, and inspire the next generation of women builders. Their commitment to fostering inclusivity and growth in the industry makes a lasting impact.

Most Memorable Project

We’ve accomplished some ambitious goals in the Hawaii Division over the past few years, but what I’m most proud of is our growing recognition that our people are the most vital part of that success. At the core of our business is our team, and this year, we are making it a priority to invest in, support, and uplift them.

Mass Timber: Innovation, Sustainability, and the Future of Building

Mass Timber is the future, and I am excited that we are at the forefront of that.  I love that we are staying agile and growing with the needs of industry – especially from a sustainable aspect.

Professional Growth

I am incredibly grateful for the career development opportunities Swinerton has provided me over the past four years. I began in Business Development—a role I truly loved—but had the opportunity to transition into HR, where my sole focus is supporting our people. I love being able to give back to the same team that has supported me throughout this journey.

I grew up in a family of strong, resilient women, and they have always been my greatest inspiration. Throughout the years, they’ve shown me what it means to balance family and career with grace, determination, and grit. Their example has shaped the way I approach both my personal and professional life.
