As we commemorate Women in Construction Week 2024, I’m thrilled to share my story as a woman thriving in the dynamic world of construction. My name is Audrey Lembke, and I’ve been a Superintendent for over eight years, with just two months under my belt at Swinerton. Despite my relatively short time with the company, my passion for construction and wealth of experience make me proud to be part of this esteemed team.
Breaking Ground: A Personal Journey
My journey into construction was sparked by my upbringing. With my father working in the industry, I was exposed to its inner workings from a young age. Attending company events with him ignited my fascination with the field, and as I grew older, I became increasingly drawn to its challenges and the tangible progress of each project. Pursuing a degree in Construction Management seemed like the natural next step, leading me to embark on a fulfilling career path that eventually led me to Swinerton.
Building Success Brick by Brick: My Role and Responsibilities
As a Superintendent, my days are filled with overseeing the intricate scheduling of activities to ensure projects progress smoothly and meet deadlines. From managing day-to-day operations to collaborating with subcontractors to address potential issues, my goal is to ensure that every project exceeds expectations. Beyond the technical aspects, I place great emphasis on fostering strong client relationships, believing that partnerships built on trust and communication are key to our collective success.
Navigating Challenges, Celebrating Triumphs
Being a young woman in a male-dominated industry certainly presents its challenges. However, I’ve learned to navigate these obstacles with determination and resilience. One of my proudest moments was taking charge of projects in crisis situations and successfully turning them around, not only restoring client confidence but also strengthening my own belief in my abilities.
Paving the Way for Future Generations: Advice for Aspiring Professionals
To any woman considering a career in construction, I say go for it! The industry offers countless opportunities for growth and fulfillment, and there’s a supportive community ready to welcome you. At Swinerton, I’ve found not only a place to excel professionally but also a family of colleagues who inspire and uplift me every day.
Beyond the Blueprint: Embracing Life Outside of Work
While construction is my passion, I find equal joy in supporting causes close to my heart outside of work. I’m deeply involved in efforts to help senior dogs find loving homes, and I cherish every moment spent with my own family—both human and canine—whether we’re enjoying the serenity of the lake or embarking on adventures in the great outdoors.
In celebrating Women in Construction Week, I hope my journey serves as a testament to the resilience, talent, and limitless potential of women in our industry. Together, let’s continue breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and building a more inclusive future for all.
